Another Month, Another Record For NJ Online Casinos

New Jersey’s online casinos broke revenue records for the third consecutive month, as September, August, and July 2020 now stand as the top three monthly revenue months in the history of the New Jersey market.

Online casinos (not including poker) brought in $85,079,481 for September, for a small 0.4% gain over August revenue. Resorts Digital Gaming moved as the biggest gainer in month-over-month earnings, with a 13.8% increase over August. Those gains put Resorts Digital just behind Borgata for the No. 2 spot in revenue by operator.

Golden Nugget Atlantic City still reigns as the top operator in the Garden State, with 36% of 2020 market share through September. Golden Nugget is up 89.5% in year-over-year revenue, with the New Jersey market as a whole ahead 102.7% versus this time last year.

New Jersey’s regulated online poker sites continue to experience revenue declines, aside from a July spike in traffic thanks to the WSOP Online Bracelet Events series on the Caesars Interactive network.

September revenue finished at $2,554,216, down 15.8% from August. New Jersey’s online poker sites set a monthly revenue record for the state in April, but the market hasn’t been able to get back to that level apart from July’s WSOP attraction.

Atlantic City casinos have the green light to finally reopen live poker rooms next week, which could have a further diminishing effect on the online poker industry in New Jersey.

More Records Set As PA Online Casinos Hit All-Time Monthly High

New Jersey Division Of Gaming Enforcement

Much like the bordering state of New Jersey, Pennsylvania’s online casino industry hit an all-time new monthly high for the third consecutive month. The Keystone State saw its mobile casinos bring in $54,665,891 in revenue, up 2.7% from a previous record-high set in August.

The Penn National Gaming DraftKings Casino license surged to the No. 2 spot in the September revenue race, according to the monthly figures from the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board.

The Pennsylvania market continues to host a hyper-competitive online casino market, as Rivers Casino (Play SugarHouse, BetRivers), Penn National Gaming (DraftKings Casino and Hollywood Casino as separate licenses), and Valley Forge Casino (FanDuel Casino) all vie for a share of the nation’s second-largest mobile casino market.

Wind Creek Bethlehem and Live! Casino Philadelphia have both debuted online casino products in the last two months as the PA online casino industry continues to expand.

PokerStars PA pulled in $2,376,045 in September, down 12.9% versus August. The PACOOP online tournament series hit the PokerStars PA network in the latter half of September, but online poker is still experiencing a decline in popularity in Pennsylvania.

Comparison with 2019

Online casinos have seen a steady rise in New Jersey since they were first legalized in 2013. While neighboring Pennsylvania and Delaware also have online casino markets, it seems that New Jersey's only competition is with itself.

January through July 2020 saw $510m in revenue. This means in the first seven months of 2020, they have already beaten the $482m gained over the whole of 2019.

How Long Can This Continue?

Despite COVID measures, online casinos are seeing a steady increase. While some casinos are closing and others are open with some distancing measures, it's no surprise that casino closings are diverting gamblers to online casinos.

The question is, will online casino players return to the land-based casinos once they reopen? There are many reasons to play online instead, including great no deposit bonuses, free spins, and more transparency for Return to Player. Still, we foresee that the good relationship between online and physical casinos will continue in the future.
